What an address says
Your public IP address names your broadband or mobile provider and places you somewhere approximate, often the wrong town. That is all. It holds no name and no street. An IP address check shows you the same view a website gets, which also makes it the quickest test of a VPN. Look once with the tunnel off, look again with it on, and compare the provider and the city.

A British footnote
UK providers can be required, under the Investigatory Powers Act, to keep records of which services each customer connects to for up to twelve months. These internet connection records do not include the pages you read, but they do include the sites. With a tunnel running, your provider's record shows a connection to a server and nothing else. That is a fact about the law and not a sales pitch, and it is one reason people in Britain check my IP results after they connect.
A two minute test
- 1With the VPN off, look up your IP and note the provider and the town.
- 2Connect, and look again. Both should now match the location you chose.
- 3Run a DNS leak test. None of your own provider's servers should be listed.
- 4Repeat on mobile data, which is a different network with a different address.

Can someone find my house from my IP?
No. A lookup gives a provider and a rough area. Only the provider can link an address to a customer, and only under legal process.
Why bother checking?

Does my address change by itself?

Do lookup pages store my details?
