How the check works
- •Reddit uses an outside verification company and does not run the check itself.
- •You are offered a selfie for age estimation, or a photo of a government ID.
- •Reddit says that it receives only the result and your date of birth, and not the image.
- •The verification company says that it deletes the images within days.
- •You do it once for each account.
The privacy trade
On paper the design is careful. It still means that a face or a passport belonging to an adult who has done nothing wrong goes to a third party, linked, however briefly, to a Reddit account that may be pseudonymous on purpose. People who have kept their identity apart from their username for years are understandably reluctant. Breaches at age verification and ID handling contractors have already happened elsewhere, which is why promises of deletion matter so much, and why it is sensible to choose the selfie over the passport when both are offered.
What changes on a non UK connection
Reddit decides who is a UK user largely by IP address. Through an exit outside the country, such as our Dublin, Amsterdam or New York locations, the UK gate is generally not shown, because as far as the site can tell you are not in the UK. This is the main reason VPN use rose so sharply in Britain in the summer of 2025. Using a VPN is lawful. Ofcom has told platforms not to promote it as a way round the rules, and Reddit may add further signals in time. We describe how things work at present and make no promise about next year.

Who sees my selfie or my ID?
An outside verification firm. Reddit says it receives only the result.
Is only adult content gated?
No. Some communities on alcohol, health and graphic news are included as well.
Does a VPN remove the check?
Generally, on a non UK exit, because the gate is triggered by a UK IP address.
Is that legal?
Using a VPN is lawful in the UK. The duty under the Act sits with the platform.
