How the setup works

Most VPN companies hand you an app and ask you to trust it. Royal Key hands you a key, a single VPN setup step that you paste into a free, open source client of your choosing. The client creates the tunnel and the key tells it where to go. To set up a VPN on a second device, you paste the same line again. There is no account to sign in to, and five devices can use one key at the same time.

Why we do not publish an app

An open source client is inspected in public, is used with many services besides ours and is not the sort of app that stores remove when they clear out VPN brands. If one project goes quiet, the key moves to another in a minute. It also keeps us honest, since we cannot put a tracker into software that we do not write. For you it means one habit to learn. Every device in the house, from a teenager's Android to a grandparent's iPad, is set up with the same three moves and the same QR code.

Before you start

✓Official sources only. A modified VPN client is the worst kind of modified app.
✓London or Manchester for everyday use. Another country only when you need one.
✓If a network refuses the connection, try a second location before anything else.
✓A sixth device will not connect until one of the five drops off.
