The methods you will meet
- •Facial age estimation: a selfie analysed by a third party firm. The platform receives an age result and not the picture, according to the vendors.
- •ID document upload: a passport or driving licence is matched against a selfie.
- •Credit card check: a card can only be held by an adult, so a small authorisation is taken as proof.
- •Mobile operator check: your network confirms that the account holder is over 18.
- •Open banking or email based estimation, which are less common.
The privacy question
The Act says platforms must not keep more than they need, and the large verification firms say they delete images after the check. You are nevertheless handing a face or a passport to a company you did not choose, and breaches at verification vendors have already happened abroad. It is reasonable for an adult to dislike that. It is also reasonable to decide that a card check or an operator check reveals less than a passport scan. Where a platform offers a choice of method, pick the one that reveals least.
Where a VPN fits, honestly
Most platforms decide whether you are in the UK from your IP address. Through an exit abroad, such as our Dublin, Amsterdam or New York locations, many of them simply do not show the UK check. That is the reason VPN use jumped in Britain in the summer of 2025. There are limits. Some checks are tied to the account and not to the address: an Xbox account registered in the UK is one example. Ofcom has told platforms not to encourage VPN use as a way round the rules. Using a VPN remains lawful. Royal Key is a service for adults. Is age verification in the UK a legal requirement?
For platforms, yes, under the Online Safety Act. The duty sits with the service and not with you.
Is it safe to upload my ID?
The big vendors say images are deleted after the check. It still means trusting a third party, so choose the least revealing method on offer.
Does a VPN remove age checks?
Often, where the check is triggered by a UK IP address. It does not where the check is tied to a UK account.
Is using a VPN for this illegal?
No. VPNs are lawful in the UK. Platforms are told not to promote them as a workaround.
