The two routes
- •Face scan: the app estimates your age from a short video selfie. Discord says the processing happens on your device, and that the footage is not stored.
- •ID scan: a photo of a government document, handled by a verification partner and deleted after the check, according to Discord.
- •You verify once for each account, and the result is an age group and not your identity.
- •If the estimate is wrong, there is an appeal route, and it involves sending an ID to support.
- •The choices offered can differ by device and by region.
What a past breach tells us
In 2025 Discord disclosed that an outside contractor handling its support tickets had been breached, and that images of government IDs were among the exposed data. Those images had been sent in by users who were appealing an age decision. The main verification flow was not the part that leaked. The manual appeal route was. There is a practical lesson in that. Take the face estimate if you can, keep passports out of support tickets where possible, and remember that every copy of a document is one more place from which it can be lost.
What changes on a non UK exit
Discord decides that you are a UK user mainly from your IP address. When you connect through a location outside the country, the UK specific prompt generally does not appear, and the settings behave as they do elsewhere. That is lawful. It may not last, since platforms have been told not to encourage VPN use as a workaround, and they can add other signals. If your account has already been flagged as needing verification, changing your address later may not clear the flag.
