The ratings, and what gets caught
- •PG: the strictest setting. It blocks social networking, online games and a great deal else.
- •13: the usual default. It blocks adult content, dating, file sharing, and sites about weapons, drugs and self harm. Anonymisers are blocked too, which means many VPN and proxy websites.
- •18: adult content is allowed. Phishing and malware protection stays on.
- •Custom: you choose the categories, and you can allow or block individual sites.
- •A watershed option applies a stricter rating during the day and a looser one at night.
Why ordinary sites get blocked
Category lists are blunt. A forum about home brewing may be filed under alcohol, a sexual health charity under adult content, and a VPN provider's home page under anonymisers. Nobody at Sky has looked at the page. It matched a category. That is why people who never asked for a filter end up searching sky shield turn off after a perfectly respectable site fails to load.
How the account holder turns it off
- 1Go to the Broadband Shield page on sky.com and sign in with the Sky iD of the account holder.
- 2Choose the 18 rating, or Custom, or switch the Shield off completely.
- 3To rescue a single site, stay on your current rating and add that site to the allowed list.
- 4Save the change. It normally takes effect within a few minutes.
- 5If the page still fails, restart the browser, because devices remember old DNS answers for a while.
If you are not the account holder
Lodgers, adult children, house sharers and guests cannot sign in to somebody else's Sky account. For them, the practical route is an encrypted tunnel. The Shield works by looking at which site a device is asking for, and with a key connected, all it sees is one secure connection to a server. A Royal Key uses VLESS over Reality, which looks like ordinary HTTPS, so the filter has no category to put it in. This is lawful. It is also only fair to mention it to whoever pays the bill.
Worth knowing
- ✓The Shield applies to the home broadband only. On mobile data your network's own content lock applies.
- ✓Sites blocked by court order, mostly piracy sites, are blocked separately and cannot be switched back on. We do not help with those.
- ✓Turning the Shield off does not remove the phishing protection on the 18 setting. It does if you switch it off entirely.
- ✓If a DNS leak test shows Sky while your VPN is on, filtered sites will stay filtered. Fix the leak first.
- ✓Parents who rely on the Shield should know that any VPN bypasses it. Device level controls are the stronger tool.
