The three settings
- •Strict: for children's phones. It blocks social media and chat, as well as adult content.
- •Moderate: the default on most accounts. Content rated 18 is blocked.
- •Off: no filtering of legal content. Illegal material stays blocked on every setting.
- •The setting belongs to the mobile number and not to the handset, so it follows the SIM.
- •Pay as you go and pay monthly accounts both have it.
Switching it off
- 1Open the EE app, or sign in to your account online, and find the Content Lock setting.
- 2Choose Off. EE will ask you to prove that you are an adult.
- 3The usual proof is a credit card in your own name. It is a check, and nothing is charged.
- 4Without a credit card, take photo ID to an EE shop, or ring customer services.
- 5When the change has gone through, switch mobile data off and on again.
Why they ask for a credit card
A debit card can be held from the age of eleven, and a credit card only from eighteen, so holding one is accepted as proof of adulthood. It is the same logic as the card checks that websites now use under the Online Safety Act. If the phone is on somebody else's contract, such as a parent's, a partner's or an employer's, then only the account holder can make the change, and on a work phone it may be locked by company policy.
The same lock on other networks

When you cannot change the account
If the contract is not yours, the lock is not yours to remove. A VPN bypasses it, because the network filters by looking at which site you request, and inside a tunnel it sees only a secure connection to a server. That is lawful for an adult. Royal Key is a service for adults only. It is not offered to under 18s, and it is not intended as a way round a lock that a parent has set on purpose.
Small print
- ✓The lock covers mobile data only. Home Wi-Fi has its own filter, if it has one at all.
- ✓A roaming SIM abroad may be filtered by the network you are visiting instead.
- ✓The lock survives a change of handset and a SIM swap.
- ✓Court ordered blocks are separate and cannot be removed.
- ✓If the VPN is on and sites are still filtered, check for a DNS leak.

Filters work by category, and categories are broad.
