The official routes
- •Downloads: several services let you download programmes to a phone or tablet while you are in the UK, and watch them anywhere afterwards. Do this before you travel.
- •Sky Go and NOW: check your current terms. Viewing in parts of Europe has changed more than once since Brexit.
- •Paid international services: BritBox, and BBC channels carried by local providers, exist for British tv abroad on a permanent basis.
- •A few hotels and holiday lets have satellite or cable packages that carry UK channels.
- •None of these needs a VPN.
The unofficial route, stated honestly
With a UK exit, such as our London or Manchester locations, the apps see a British address, and much of the time they play. People use this to watch itv abroad, for channel 4 abroad and for sky go abroad every summer. You should know three things first. The terms of ITVX, Channel 4 and the others restrict viewing to the UK, so this breaks their terms, even though it breaks no law and the streams themselves are official. They block a good many data centre addresses, so it will not always work. And a TV licence is required for live television whatever route you take.

- •ITVX: itvx abroad searches peak in the summer. Its terms say UK only, and Premium downloads are the official way to travel with it.
- •Channel 4: available in the UK and Ireland. If you want to watch channel 4 abroad properly, download before you go.
- •Sky Go: tied to your Sky account. It blocks many VPN addresses.
- •NOW: now tv abroad carries the same UK only terms as the rest.
- •My5 and U: smaller services, with the same rule.
If you decide to use a UK exit
- 1Set it up at home: ask @royalkey_club_bot for the free days, and add the key to a client on the device you will take with you.
- 2Test each app through London before you leave.
- 3Abroad, connect to London or Manchester first, and only then open the app.
- 4If an app refuses, switch to the other UK city and reopen it.
- 5Keep your expectations modest. Blocks come in waves, and no VPN wins every week.
