Five tools that get confused
- ▸VPN: an encrypted tunnel for the whole device. It hides your traffic from the local network and your address from websites.
- ▸Web proxy: a page that fetches other pages for you. It covers one tab and is not private, since the proxy's owner can read it.
- ▸Browser VPN or extension: nearly always a proxy for that browser alone. It needs permission to read your pages.
- ▸Smart DNS: it changes only where your lookups go, so that a streaming service sees another region. There is no encryption at all, and your provider still sees everything.
- ▸Private or incognito browsing: it stops your own device from keeping a history. The network sees exactly what it saw before.
