How the number is made
Cheap VPNs reach their headline figure by division. You pay for two or three years in advance, and the advert divides the total by the number of months. When that term ends, many services renew automatically at their standard rate, which can be three or four times higher, and they charge the card they already hold. All of this appears in the terms. None of it appears in the banner.
The sum that tells the truth

- Is the price shown in pounds, or in dollars with a conversion fee from your bank?
- Is VAT included in the figure you were shown?
- Does the fourteen day cooling off period apply, or are you asked to waive it?
- Is cancelling a button in your account, or a chat with a retention agent?
- Does the refund guarantee have conditions attached, such as a data limit?
What the roundups leave out
Every January a fresh crop of pages appears under titles such as best VPNs 2026, and the ones about the best cheap VPNs are the most eager of all. Their writers are paid when you buy, and paid more when you buy a longer plan, which is why the big green button never offers a single month. Use them to collect facts that can be checked at the source. Do not expect them to know how a service performs on your broadband after the school run and the evening news.
